New gourmet popcorn good for final summer gatherings

To stay healthy and still snack with friends, Canadians should consider popcorn as a pre-bbq snack, for when friends and family try to get the most out of their patio furniture before fall kicks in.

One great excuse to serve popcorn as a cocktail nibble is presented in a recent report from researchers at the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania. The team there found that popcorn and other whole grains contain a good amount of free-radical reducing polyphenols.

In fact, popcorn was found to have the highest concentration of polyphenols of all whole grain foods. Dr Joe Vinson who led the study explained that "whole grain products have comparable antioxidants per gram to fruits and vegetables."

This means that while it's not a great idea to cut out fruits and vegetables from your diet, it can be a good idea to include whole grain snacks along with the usual veggies and dip for an outdoor gathering.

It might even be an idea to check out a new gourmet popcorn line to make that bbq just a little classier.

Con Agra foods Canada recently released Orville Redenbacher's Select White - a line of white corn with a touch of real butter for a decadent flavor.
